As I previously said, I want to focus the next few posts on reducing food costs to keep more money in your pocket. Let’s talk about high protein meals that gives you the nutrients you need to stay fuller longer, and reduce potentially costly snacking.
Whether working remotely or in an office, the temptation of dining out calls to us all. Especially if you are a person that grows tired of eating the same thing every day. The good news is there are easy ways to change things up while still keeping costs down.
One of the best ways to save on protein costs with budget-friendly meals is by cycling in the low sodium packet and canned varieties of fish like salmon and tuna, and also chicken. At a cost of .96 cents to $2, that is a gem to have a week to reduce the overall food cost for the month. Of course an easy go-to is tuna or chicken salad. Here are a few other ideas to change things up.
High Protein Meals- Ideas
Wraps. For a quick meal, try the ranch or hickory smoked tuna packets that provide at least 15g of protein. Add in cottage cheese and preferred veggies like sliced tomato, sweet peppers, cucumber and lettuce for some extra crunch. Condiments like grainy mustard, a drizzle of ranch, salsa or a vinaigrette just layers on flavor.
Pasta. A quick orzo salad with seasonal vegetables is also a great vehicle for canned or packets of tuna. Adding in fresh herbs like basil, parsley and green onion can truly transform the dish and provide a hearty stretch meal.
Salmon Cakes. While crab cakes are delicious, they are not cost effective for the average person. Try salmon cakes instead with a packet of pink salmon that can be jazzed up with diced celery, fresh parsley and capers to make a great sandwich with veggies of choice or as a topper to herbed rice or pasta. Canned salmon tends to be in the $2 range but tends to yield more servings and also provides about 20g of protein per serving.
Stewed Salmon. One of my favorite dishes as a kid, stewed canned salmon in a spicy tomato-based sauce over rice is incredibly comforting and cost effective.
